OUTSTANDING 'PRINCESS FEATHER' APPLIQUÉ CIRCA 1860-70

A gorgeous quilt. The design is magnificent...such movement.  Four swirling appliqué motifs in the center are embellished with cheddar stars. Appliquéd leaf shapes also decorate. A super swag border frames the center design. The fabrics used are a solid red, a gorgeous deep, forest green, a double pink print and cheddar. Another name for this pattern is "Star and Plume".  Somehow that name seems more fitting because of those wonderful cheddar stars that seem to punctuate the swag and swirling designs.

Quilt has never been washed.  It is approximately 140 years old and does not appear to have been used very much, if at all. Fabrics are very strong and alive (not dry). Colors are as bright and beautiful as the day it was made.  Pencil marks from the quilting pattern are still evident. It has overall age yellowing and some dark brown age spots.  It may be time to give it a bath to remove the surface dust and soil.  I am leaving that decision to the new owner (some would prefer to keep it in it's unwashed state.).  Back has two patches where a mouse had nibbled.  No damage to the front. Size is a huge 93" x 99".  Every stitch is hand done. Quilting and appliqué stitches are 9 to the inch. Quilting is done in a double clam shell pattern in the white areas, and follows the design in the appliquéd shapes.

A magnificent quilt for the advanced collector. $2900.00

Beautiful fabrics that span the period 1870-90 compose this quilt.  3240 small triangles that measure 2'' on the long side and 1 1/2"on the short sides are artistically placed to create a modern art fabric painting of lights and darks. Rich browns and paisley oranges...double pinks and homespun blues....shirting stripes and floral prints...all surrounded by a double border that acts like a frame.
Condition is excellent.  64" x 76"

OUTSTANDING "SUNBURST" VARIATION

A gorgeous quilt.  The density of the quilting creates a beautiful, rich, raised effect when this quilt is viewed on a bed.

It was found, tucked away very carefully, in a trunk in a home in Ironville, New York.  Quilt has never been washed.  It is approximately 100 years old and does not appear to have been used.  Fabrics are very strong and alive (not dry). Colors are as bright and beautiful as the day it was made.  Pencil marks from the quilting pattern are still very faintly evident. The red print is rich and deep and utilizes black and yellow in it's pattern. The white fabric is a soft white. The binding is a solid red. There is a tag sewn on the bac
