OUTSTANDING NEW YORK STATE 1860'S NAVY ON WHITE APPLIQUE QUILT
An extraordinary applique quilt - one of the best navy blue and white New York State applique quilts I have seen. An original design - this quilter had a great artistic sense. Outstanding workmanship - quilting stitches are 9-10 per inch, applique stitches are so close it is almost impossible to count (14-15 per inch).
6 large floral shapes cut from a navy fabric with tiny white double dots seem to twirl in the center of this quilt. Additional fleur-de-lis shapes, leaf motifs and other floral shapes are cut and appliqued with precision - demonstrating the high skill level of this quilter. A stylized border of leafed branches frames the center design.
A very original and artistic, one-of-a-kind, mid 19thc. applique quilt. Excellent condition - free from rips, tears, repairs, fading, stains.
A beautiful quilt for the bed or the wall. It is from my collection and I have used it summers on a wall. It reminds me of a Matisse painting. 78"x102". A quilt for the advanced collector. Click on photo to enlarge it.

This quilt is so early. The fabric sampling is wonderful. And the wide border with printed eagles is so unusual. The eagles hold a banner in their beaks " E Pluribus Unum" ("Out of many, one", A United States motto that is currently on the one dollar bill ).The pieced blocks are set on point in a grid system made from a wonderful, early 19th c. print. The off-white solid fabric used throughout the quilt is a fine homespun linen The printed fabrics are chintzes and other printed cottons, most are from the 1st quarter of the 19th c..
This pattern has quite a few different names, "Eight Point Design", "Texas Star", "Shoofly", "Tippecanoe and Tyler Too", etc.....the list goes on and on.
The condition is good for this quilt considering it's age. There are some dark brown spots and the very edge is worn. It could be turned a quarter inch and thereby given a new edge or a quarter inch edging could be applied or it could be enjoyed and cherished just the way it is (my preference - The older I become, the more I appreciate imperfections and what they represent). There are no breaks in the early fabrics that were used to make the blocks, which is amazing. Size is 100"x104".
A quilt for the collector of early quilts and early fabrics and quilts with patriotic themes. $3600 SOLDClick on photo to enlarge it. Eagle border. Detail views 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
EXUBERANT "ROSE OF SHARON" APPLIQUÉ CIRCA 1880-90
Found in Connecticut, it is a very striking and powerful interpretation of this pattern.....no "shrinking violet" made this quilt!.....or maybe she was and expressed her power with a needle...?????......if only they could talk! Four large floral appliqués in red, green and cheddar are positioned in the center of the quilt. An interesting swag border frames the center design. Binding is in cheddar.
Upon close examination, it is noted that the red fabric used throughout the quilt is a slightly heavier weight cotton. Perhaps this woman had experienced problems with the red dye weakening the red fabrics of her quilts and decided to purchase a more sturdy fabric for the red designs. Quilting stitches are 6 to the inch. Appliqué stitching is 8+to the inch. Binding is machine applied.
Size: 87" x 87".
Excellent overall condition. Free from rips, tears, repairs, fading. Quilt is strong and freshly laundered. (light stain on the back).
A wonderful quilt that makes a strong statement when used on either the wall or the bed. $2200.00 SOLD
