SHEEP BELL-RINGER TOY
FRENCH BALL TOSS GAME :  'THE BAKER'
Made from layers of glue soaked paper that were built up in a mold to form this toy. Paint was then applied to define the features. "The Baker" is one of a series of different character faces that are found.  It is French and I would date it as turn-of-the-century, 1890-1900.  Children would play with this toy by trying to throw a ball through the open mouth.
Generally good condition.  There are some places where flakes of paint are missing and there is some paint touch-up.  Considering it received a battering with hurled balls during its use as a toy,  I am not offended by these imperfections. Height: 14 1/2", Width 10"

FRENCH BISQUE CLOWN FIGURINES
Adorable! This mischievious twosome have beautifully hand painted, creamy bisque faces.  Dressed in clown outfits with ruffles at the neck and pointed hats, one has a snowball ready to be hurled through the air at his companion. Behind each figure is an open vessel that could hold flowers, etc.
Excellent, perfect condition, free from chips, cracks, or repairs. Height 5 1/4".  The fine quality of the facial decoration indicates they were made late 19th c.
A fun pair to put on a shelf in the doll room.
